Podcast Interview with aboutGroovy.com: The Sequel

Posted by Jason Rudolph on 4th February 2008

It’s been almost a year since I first sat down with Scott Davis for an aboutGroovy.com interview, and the upcoming Groovy/Grails Experience seemed as good a reason as any for us to catch up.

2008-02-04 aboutGroovy.com

In addition to discussing the various conference sessions in the works, we also spend a few moments exploring some relative merits of Rails and Grails. While we won’t tell you which framework is right for you, I do suggest some key features that each framework could stand to adopt from the other, and we even discuss how some of that cross-pollination is already coming to fruition.

Many thanks to Scott for having me on the podcast.

Podcast Interview with aboutGroovy.com

Posted by Jason Rudolph on 14th February 2007

I recently had the chance to sit down with Scott Davis, Editor in Chief of aboutGroovy.com, for an interview about Grails, how I got involved with it, and what lies ahead.  It runs about 23 minutes in length, but we manage to cover quite a bit in that time frame.  We agree that we don't need one programming language/technology "to rule them all."  We discuss the origin of (and the potential future for) Getting Started with Grails, and we set the record straight on whether EJB3 is a legacy technology.  (Spoiler alert: It's not.)

Proper RSS support is coming soon for aboutGroovy.com podcasts.  In the meantime, feel free to download the MP3 directly.

Many thanks to Scott and aboutGroovy.com for the interview.

Podcast Interview: Grails 0.3 Release, Upcoming Book, and More

Posted by Jason Rudolph on 17th November 2006

I recently had the opportunity to chat with Sven Haiges for an episode of the Grails podcast. We discussed the many new features (and impressive number of bug fixes) in the recent 0.3 release as well as several of the upcoming improvements slated for 0.4 and 0.5. We also talked about the overall increasing momentum of Grails, and Sven recapped last week's W-JAX 2006 conference, which attracted standing-room-only crowds for the Groovy and Grails sessions! It was a good time, and if you listen closely, you might even catch an announcement of an upcoming Grails-related publication.

Many thanks to Sven for having me on the podcast.

Java Posse Recommends Grails + EJB3 Article

Posted by Jason Rudolph on 10th September 2006

The latest episode of the Java Posse, the premier podcast for all things Java, mentions the recent Grails + EJB3 article on InfoQ.  It's Episode 80, and you can hear what they have to say in the Quick News items at about the 43:25 mark.

InfoQ has a detailed article on using the Grails framework, which is a Groovy-based alternative to Ruby on Rails, to access EJB3 domain components (or domain objects).  All the way from entity objects over to back-end database tables through to a fully-working web user interface. It's a long article, but if you're interested in seeing what Grails is all about, it's, I think, the most complete Grails tutorial I've seen yet, and nicely covers the domain of integrating Grails with an enterprise system.

Thanks to the Java Posse for continuing to spread the word about Grails and Groovy.

If you're not familiar with the Java Posse, I highly recommend that you check out the podcast.  The newscasts provide a great way to stay up-to-date, and the interviews offer insightful access to the industry experts behind the news.

Podcast Discusses Legacy DB Support in Grails

Posted by Jason Rudolph on 14th August 2006

Sven Haiges has convinced his employer to give Grails a shot, and he's decided to chronicle his journey in a weekly Grails podcast.  He gives an honest play-by-play of his successes, the occasional bumps along the way, and the workarounds as well.  He's hit the ground running, and the second episode discusses connecting Grails to a legacy database schema, his interview with Groovy project lead Guillaume Laforge, and Eclipse support for Groovy and Grails.  It'll no doubt be interesting to witness the real-world adoption of this promising framework.  Kudos to Sven for sharing his experience and for choosing podcasting as the way to do so.
